Emily Inkpen is Creative Director at Alternative Stories, a repped novelist, scriptwriter, director and general word nerd. Her audio drama, The Dex Legacy, recently won a BSFA Award for Best Audio Fiction, and she is expanding that universe through multiple mediums.
About Emily
Emily was born in South London and studied English Literature at Glasgow University. Her subjects of interest were philosophy and theory and criticism, where she took delight in finding connections between a vast variety of texts. From psychology to art history, to political commentary and works of literature, Emily studied and mapped recurring themes spanning hundreds of years.
After graduation, Emily moved to London and worked as a copywriter and medical writer for various companies. As a medical writer, Emily has written for conditions such as haemophilia, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, various cancer treatments, and led on several of the Bayer women’s health accounts.
As a writer in the gaming industry, Emily defined tone of voice across various games on iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam. Most of these were board game adaptations, including Monopoly, Cluedo, The Game of Life, The Game of Life 2, Jumanji, and Taboo.
Emily is the writer and co-director of the BSFA Award-winning science fiction audio drama, The Dex Legacy. This audio drama is based on her trilogy of novels, currently repped by the John Jarrold Literary Agency. Her work explores dark, political themes, with knotty relationships and complex characters. It has not been described as “easy listening”, but packs a real punch and leaves listeners wanting more. You can find out more here.

The Writers’ Gym Podcast
Emily has co-hosted two seasons of The Writers’ Gym so far, joining forces with Dr. Rachel Knightley and Chris Gregory. Every week they discuss relevant topics, helping writers to feel a little less alone in what can be a solitary business.
Every so often they feature guest stars, who have so far included Gareth Powell, Nigel Planer and Rhianna Pratchett.
